So here's the deal. We love watching television. It is somewhat an escape we have from, you know, “harsh and cruel reality”. We love watching television because it relaxes us. Kinda. Well, the shows in it do. Whether you like drama, comedy, singing competition, television has it. Here in the Philippines, people are often hooked by the soap operas during primetime. Commonly, family members gather in the living room after supper ready to watch the next episode of a koreanovela, mexicanovela, or the usual local offering. TV networks make a lot of millions out of it.
However, many have already noticed that every local drama in town have the same storyline. First show: mother loses child, child grows up a good person despite poverty, mother looks for her child, child can't accept mother at first, child gets kidnapped, mother dies while saving child, child forgives mother. THE END. Then the second show comes in with different popular actors and actresses, different writers, but same producers and same storyline. And so on. And so forth! Personally, I am already sick of it that I stop watching local TV series. Call me unpatriotic but that's it, I've already made my mind about it.

And then there's this local TV series that heavily tackles homosexuality, with story surrounding a married man and his affair with another guy. At first I was like, this is new. I gave it a shot. But as usual, it's still stressful to watch. With all the crying with no reasons at all whatsoever, just for the sake of drama, it just sickens me. So after the first week of watching, I decided to just have reruns of my most favorite American sitcom at night.
But we all know how that works though, yes? Given that the central theme of the series is homosexuality, before it even aired, we've all figured that the church would react to it sooner or later. And I am surprised to how soon that happened. The church is already scrutinizing the show saying TV shows should depict culture in the context of morality. I HONESTLY DON'T GET AND CAN'T COMPREHEND THAT. Why? Ok, let's say homosexuality is immoral. But why single out that when there's much more immoral things shown on local TV series way before this kind of show aired? Murder (hello with the lines “iligpit lahat nang haharang sa plano”), kidnapping, child abuse. GREED. ENVY. ADULTERY. Hoho. These are some of so many things that's been shown on TV, then and now, and no one has ever scrutinized them. My question is, why single out homosexuality?
I am Catholic. I go to church. My relationship with my God is so special to me. I always pray to God when I eat, before going to sleep, after a good news. I believe wholeheartedly that my God is a good one, and He loves everything he creates, including homosexuals. But my logic about the pressing morality issue of homosexuality is this – if it were such a huge crime to the Higher Power, then gays and lesbians are going to [the literal] hell (along with murderers, rapists, grafts, adulterer – however long they stay in prison, right?!!). If God has a problem with it, homosexuals will deal with that later on, not the straight guys or the religious ones or the spirituals. So why deprive them of happiness they deserve even here in this lifetime? It's just so unfair while we believe they're going to suffer after life in hell, we are making this place a lot like hell, too, for them. Let them live the life they want because seriously, if it were a fact that those who “practices” homosexuality would burn in hell after life, it is nobody's goddamn business after all. It is theirs. It won't be YOUR problem. IT REALLY IS NOT.
